Buy low, sell high.

The simplest way of making money, buy low, and sell high. You have to exploit the laws of supply and demand. With my main account, I often put a buy offer on the grand exchange for yew logs at around 5 gp lower than the market price. Once I have bought a large sum (10,000+) I will sell them for the market price. This strategy is for making trades within a relatively short period. The gains are small, but by making many of these trades, they add up. I will often have a buy and sell offer up at the same time. This way I am feeding the buyers who are willing to pay more while at the same time making other sellers wait. And they often will put their sell offer lower in order to expedite the selling process.

Armor

A timeless way of merching is to buy individual pieces of armor and then sell them as a full set. With the grand exchange this is easier than ever. You can even create the full set of armor by right clicking on the grand exchange clerk and choosing sets. You'll have to have all the required components for the full set - platebody, platelegs/skirt, kiteshield, and full helm. After the first 100k, I bought the components for several of these sets with adamant armor and sold them for a decent profit. It is always crucial to do the research. It could take awhile to buy and sell these sets, but it is part of the business.

The more you buy and sell on a certain niche, the more likely you are to "burn out" the buying base. Some items, such as coal and yew logs, will always have buyers and sellers, but maybe not at the price you want. One other niche I played around with is pie shells. Anybody can buy pots of flour and use a few jugs of water to create pastry dough, buy pie dishes and make pie shells. Pie shells sell for up to 450 gp each. It takes a bit of work, but the profit is worth it.

getting to the first 100k

A variety of items can be bought from the general store and with minimal effort sold for a profit. Filling a bowl or bucket with water isn't too bad. Water is free. It might surprise you how fast you can accumulate wealth this way, buying out the general store and clothing store and then selling. I accumulate a stash of these products before I go to the grand exchange, just to be more time efficient. While I am doing this, I have a buy offer on the grand exchange for bowls at 25 gp each, a little above market price. I don't have many sellers, but I did get about 100 and after filling with water sold for 66 each. Tidy profit. A search of "bucket" on the grand exchange manual shows that a bucket is 39 gp, a bucket of water is 66 gp. It's much cheaper to buy a bucket at the store, but then you have to wait for the store stock to regenerate. If you can have 100 buckets without having to wait for the general store, you will make money much faster, even if the profit margin is not as large. But the buckets of water might sit on the grand exchange for awhile.

So after a few minutes of buying and selling, I have a decent starting amount of money. I have diversified to buying jugs, buckets and bowls and filling them with water. These items can also sell for a fair amount of cash. You have to remember your customers. Who is willing to spend a lot of money for something you can get in 5 minutes? Rich players who are trying to get quick xp. A jug of water becomes wine and a bowl of water becomes a bowl of stew.

So for this blog, I am creating a character, JBMerch. you can add me if you'd like.

As I exited the tutorial, I grabbed a few bones and gp that were laying on the ground. I pass a potato field on my way to varrock... Potatos sell for 54 gp ea on the grand exchange. You always have to do some work to start out.

First stop: Thessalia's clothes shop. I have 56 gp in my backpack.
I am going to buy every blue skirt in the shop, and make my way to the grand exchange. I sell the 10 skirts I got for 1942 gp. almost 1000% profit. This is one of the simplest trades to make quick cash. You may have to list your items for a lower price to sell quickly, or you can try waiting for them to sell.
You can also buy hammers from the general store and sell for a profit, but it is not as lucrative.
Small trades like these help you build capital to make larger trades.

Starting out

This blog is devoted to runescape merchanting advice. I recently started playing runescape again, and making use of the grand exchange I turned the 2 million gp i had in my bank into 6 mil by casual trading. But you don't need this much money to get started.

First of all, remember. RS is an open market and prices change. Don't be fooled by scams. Only invest what you can afford. I am not responsible if you lose money on trades. And hey, RuneScape should be about fun. So don't stop having fun. Comments, suggestions, criticism, success stories are all welcome.
